Covid 19 hits the UK, the Prime Minister, a Churchill devotee, invokes the ‘Blitz Spirit’. Yet something happens for the first time in British history - all pubs close.
A community hub for some and an addiction enabler for others, pubs play a significant role in the country’s complicated relationship with alcohol. In fact, the UK government states that during the pandemic, specifically in 2021, alcoholic liver deaths increased by 21%.
Ironically the then Prime Minister’s drinking in the company of others played a significant part in his political downfall…
Last Orders documents a selection of pubs in South East London closed during the pandemic, photographed through their windows.
